Skilled Shooter, Lucky Shot -The Firearm Blog

There are many traditions associated with Saint Patrick’s Day: wearing green, window-mounted shamrocks, disgusting green beer and now TFB’s Skilled Shooter, Lucky Shot posts. I’d like to think that we have included a little something for everyone (who doesn’t need more magazines).

Here’s a little known fact about Saint Patrick that is worth sharing: he was Ireland’s first sub MOA shooter. That’s right, besides being credited with spreading Christianity to the Emerald Isle, St. Patrick was also a dominating force on the rifle range. He did ruffle a lot of feathers, though, when he broke ranks with Bushmaster to run LMT guns exclusively. But nothing helped Patty’s performance more than his weekend handloading – rumor has it he added just a touch of peat to every cartridge.

And Saint Patrick’s little known motto was born: Skilled Shooter, Lucky Shot.

St. Patrick’s Day At TFB: Skilled Shooter, Lucky Shot

There’s no better way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day than “running” the snakes out of town with some .22LR shotshells. On the second thought, unless they pose a danger to your pets or children, let our slithering friends live in peace. They keep the mice at bay and could care less about wasting a bite on you. Speaking of mice, rimfire shotshells are a decent choice for dispatching rodents without the worry for long range ricochets.

.22 LONG RIFLE SHOTSHELLS

Designed for pest control the CCI Shotshell is just what you need instead of a solid bullet to control those pesky ground runners.

Finding a bad mag in your stash is like picking out a four leaf clover – without the luck. It’s a common question among shooters “how many magazines should I own per gun?” My expert advice always involves a mathematical calculation:

((Price of the gun)/(Price of one magazine)) ((365) /(your age x 3)) = magazines per firearm

Let me know what number comes up for your favorite gun.

MAGPUL – AR-15 30RD PMAG GEN M3 MAGAZINE 223/5.56

The MAGPUL PMAG GEN M3 polymer magazine continues to revolutionize magazine technology for the AR-15 / M4 platforms. The third-generation PMAG further expands the strength, reliability, and versatility of the original PMAG.

The MAGPUL PMAG GEN M3 is molded from a polymer formula that delivers distinctly greater resistance to crushing and all forms of impact, with extra reinforcement in the mag catch and feed lip areas.

  • Long-life USGI-spec stainless steel spring
  • Four-way anti-tilt follower and constant-curve internal geometry for reliable feeding
  • Tool-less disassembly for easy cleaning
  • Pop-off dust cover helps minimize debris intrusion
  • Removable floorplate is both stronger and slimmer
  • Fully compatible with the HK® 416 and MR556A1, M27 IAR, British SA-80, and FN® SCAR™ MK 16/16S.

Is looking down into your old scope like staring into an empty glass of green beer? Yeah, you are going to want to increase your hit percentage on those lucky shots. Time to upgrade.

VORTEX OPTICS – STRIKE EAGLE SCOPE 1-6X24MM AR-BDC RETICLE

Speed and versatility—that’s what 1x variable optics offer AR shooters who need to engage targets from point-blank out to extended ranges. And that’s exactly what you’re going to get with Vortex’s new Strike Eagle 1-6 x 24. Take into consideration what it costs to get into this optic, and you may find you can’t afford not to buy it.

Whether you’re burning through a 3-Gun Stage, logging some range time, or holding for hair on a coyote you’ve duped into thinking you’re lunch, the Strike Eagle is up to the task. High-quality, fully multi-coated lenses deliver a clear, crisp sight picture and optimal low-light performance. A true one-power on the low end of its 6x zoom range provides quick target acquisition in close quarters scenarios. Need to engage targets at distance? Crank it up to 6x and let it rip.

One of the best possible upgrades for an off-the-shelf AR15 is a trigger replacement. And Geissele has it pretty much perfected. So take off that stupid “Kiss me, I’m Irish” shirt your wife hates so much and grab yourself a new trigger. It’s worth it.

The Super Dynamic (SD)triggers have the same body geometry as the SSA models and feature a flat trigger shoe that reduces perceived pull weight, improves control, and gives excellent tactile feedback. Super Dynamic Combat (SD-C) trigger has a 2.5 lb. first stage and a 2 lb. second stage for a 4.5 lb total pull weight with a sharp, repeatable trigger release. Super Dynamic Enhanced (SD-E) trigger has a combined 3.5 lb. total pull weight, with a 2.3 lb. first stage and a 1.2 lb. second stage. Super Dynamic 3-Gun (SD-3G) single-stage trigger has 3.5 lb. pull weight with a short pull length and short reset – excellent for fast-action competitions.

Angry, murderous leprechauns are normally more active at night. And the only way to successfully dispatch murderous leprechauns in low-light situations is with a quality weaponlight.

SUREFIRE – X300U-B ULTRA WEAPON LIGHT

The rugged Surefire X300U-B Ultra with its T-slot thumbscrew clamp attaches securely to the Universal and Picatinny rails (fitting more models than ever before) found on most handguns, and it will fit many popular rail-less handguns by using SureFire’s MR adapter mounts. As always for this best-in-class model, it features integral onefinger ambidextrous momentary- and constant-on switching and can be equipped with SureFire’s optional DG handgun grip switch. This versatile WeaponLight also attaches to the Picatinny rails on long guns—more securely than ever before—and can be activated via an optional XT remote switch that gives you precision control of the light while letting you maintain a proper grip on your weapon.

  • Lumens:1000
  • TIR lens creates smooth, far-reaching light with a large center spot beam
  • Runtime: 1.25 hours

Surefire X300U-B Ultra offers the power to positively identify threats at significant distances while temporarily impairing an adversary’s vision.
